The Kentucky Psychiatric Medical Society Foundation is pleased to sponsor the Theresa L. Walton Essay Contest. The essay contest is open to ninth and tenth grade students throughout Kentucky. Each high school is permitted to submit its three best essays for consideration.

Essay Topic: When Not to Keep a Secret Essay You want to respect a confidence, but what if the secret is dangerous or frightening? What should you do? Who should you tell and when is it all right not to keep a secret?

Presentation: Each individual essay must be typed on 8.5 x 11 white, unlined paper, no more than 750 words, with numbered pages. The essay must be double-spaced, correctly spelled and punctuated. Do not put your name on the actual essay itself. Pages must be stapled to a separate cover page that includes the following information: • Your name • Your home address & phone number • Your school • Your grade • School address & phone number • Your teacher’s full name & phone number A copyright transfer agreement signed by a parent or guardian and the student must be included.

Judging: To prevent any possible bias, the judges will not see the information contained on the cover sheet when reviewing the essays. Family members of the Kentucky Psychiatric Medical Association are not eligible to participate in this contest.

Prizes: First, second and third place state winners will be selected from all the entries submitted for consideration. The first place winner receives an iPad,  second place receives a $300 gift card, and third place receives a $150 gift card. The teachers of the winning students receive a $250 gift card for first place, $150 gift card for second place, and $100 gift card for third place.

Deadline: Each school may submit its three best essays no later than March 7, 2014.   Please mail the essays with accompanying copyright transfer agreements to:
